Facebook is looking into creating a subscription version without ads

A few reports have come out saying Facebook is looking into a subscription service to finally get rid of ads. This is great news if true and will spark a huge turn in the public opinion of Facebook. Over the last few weeks the services has been under fire from governments and users around the world over the use of data for advertising purposes. A subscription service that gets rid of the ads is a welcome change users have been asking for since the beginning, and one can only hope limits the tracking as a result.

Facebook has declined to comment on looking into a subscription version at this time. Facebook is on the fence about providing a subscription service for a reason, as it generates almost all income from ads. If Facebook does launch a payed version it will still be a long ways away, and the implications on data collection for payed users is unknown at this time.

Zuckerberg has said that using ads for generating income is the best way to provide services for everyone no mater the income level. Sandberg has said that Facebook will consider everything moving forward including payed services.

We certainly thought about lots of other forms of monetization including subscriptions, and we’ll always continue to consider everything ~ Sandberg
